ANNOUNCEMENT
The publication of Philosophical Midwifery: A New Paradigm for Understanding Human Problems with Its Validation (Hyparxis Press) by authors Pierre Grimes, Ph.D. and Regina Uliana, Ph.D. marks the introduction of a challenging new idea of human development into our culture.
As a mode of both cognitive psychotherapy and philosophical
counseling, yet different from them both, Philosophical Midwifery is a
method for surfacing and resolving human problems that have their origin
in a new class of false beliefs, called the pathologos. The pathologos
is an unsuspected belief and fully surfaces only in the struggle to
achieve human excellence.
The theory and practice of Philosophical Midwifery is presented through an analysis of two exploratory in-depth interviews. The understanding of the origin of the pathologos, what maintains it and resolves it, is explored through an adaptation of Socratic midwifery by Pierre Grimes.
The roots of Philosophical Midwifery are traced back to the Platonic philosophical tradition and compared to its dialectic. The work also offers a comparative study positioning itself in respect to Western and Eastern philosophy and to the principle systems of psychotherapy. Its theories are shown to be consistent with the most recent scientific theories in Chaos theory, Recursive Algorithmic theory, Systems theory, and Field theory. The validation study of its claims is based upon the Gottschalk-Glasser Content Analysis Scales. The justification of its claim to being a new paradigm is based upon Thomas Kuhn's thesis.
The book, with its validation study, is based upon a paper presented before the 94th International American Psychological Association Conference that concluded,
"Thus, the long held belief that a rational psychology is, in principle, incapable of either being empirically verified, or of affecting emotionalized behavior, is rejected"
